My name is Jon Gerdemann, and I am an Audio Engineer, also known as a Sound Guy. I do audio for just about anything, from Film and TV to Music, to Live Sound.

I began playing with various tape machines and experimenting with recording as a kid. I started out with a two-track Dolby tape machine, a handheld tape recorder, and a four-track tube Reel-to-Reel machine that I remember was called the Sony Stereophonic, which I had found at a thrift store. With these machines I experimented recording myself and friends playing various instruments in various situations. I eventually got a copy of Acid Pro and began learning about digital recording. Having no formal training, I eventually decided to take a music production class at a local community college. There I learned the ins and outs of Cubase, as well as MIDI and the basics in sound, electronics and acoustics. This sparked my interest immensely and I decided to make this my career.

At this point I had been studying French for a few years, and decided to enroll in an audio-visual school in France in an effort to become fluent and still learn my craft. There I was immersed in the technicalities of Sound, as well as everything related to it. I was taught how to use various DAWs and Analog and Digital audio production. I was taught about working in Film, Studio Recording, Live Sound, Mastering, as well as Photography, Cinematography, Lighting, Video Editing, and countless other related fields. During this period I interned at studios in the UK, the US, and worked on a great number of projects in Europe and the US.

After graduation, I was still interested in learning about using large format consoles, and obtaining certifications. So I enrolled in another Audio school where I learned about using consoles such as the Neve VR with Flying Faders, SSL 4000 G+, Neotek Elite, as well as control surfaces such as the Digidesign Control 24 and Cl24. I also obtained certifications in Pro-Tools, Waves Plug-Ins, SmAArt and Reason.

To put myself through school I worked at Guitar Center in the Pro Audio department, where I was greatly versed all the gear and software available out there.

After graduation, I set off to San Francisco to intern at a recording studio in the Bay Area. After months of interning and gaining valuable experience, I was brought on board. I worked on post audio for television shows, recorded conference calls, ADR and Voice Overs, and of course music. I eventually decided to leave the Bay Area and head down to Los Angeles where I have been working as an Independent Contractor ever since. It is here in L.A. that I have gained my most valuable and extensive experience, doing literally everything audio related.

I work on Films from major motion pictures to small independents, working on set as a Boom Op or Mixer/Recordist, or in post doing Sound Design, Editing, Mixing, ADR/VO Recording, Foley and Sound Fx, and sometimes even Composing. I also do quite a bit of Music Production, Recording, Programming, Mixing and Mastering.

I even do odd jobs like editing Voice Over reels for actors, recording Audio Books, Lessons in Pro-Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Reason, etc; and I have even done some French Translation for a number of projects. I have also been known to do a Voice Over or two myself, usually in French. But if it is Audio, it's what I do, and it's what I love to do!
